The Joel Barlow/Immaculate High (BMAC) boys swim team will count on a small number of swimmers to score a lot of points at the upcoming state Class M finals this week.

Amanda Macchio, a senior at Joel Barlow High School, is a rare commodity.

Not only is she the only diver on the boy’s swimming and diving team, she is one of only two divers at Barlow this school year. Brittany Calzone, another senior, was the only diver for the girls team this school year.

But Barlow is not alone in its scarcity of divers. At last month’s South-West Conference championship meet, Macchio was one of three girl divers among the total of 15 divers from the 11 schools competing in the championships. For the third straight year she finished as SWC runner-up.

With the Joel Barlow High boys basketball team going 5-15 during the season, it would seem there was not much fun for the players, But seniors Tyler Colby, Blake Kramer and Jon Sonnenschein would beg to differ.

Although all three arrived on the scene differently, the one thing they have in common is the fun they had this past season, and most of all the great memories all will take with them.

Not much separated the Joel Barlow High girls ski team from first place at the State Open last week.

In fact, the Falcons were less than three seconds off the lead at Mount Southington on Thursday, March 4. One of several teams to finish within a span of only a few seconds, they were fourth in a field of nine with a time of 325.40.

It was Barlow’s first trip to the race as a team since 2007 and its best finish since 2003.

Despite having a vocal home crowd cheering it on, the Joel Barlow High boys basketball team’s season-long offensive woes continued in its game against Pomperaug last week.

The Falcons were held to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters on Wednesday, Feb. 24. They managed to get in gear for the last frame but by then the deficit was too great as they fell 60-41 in the season finale.
