Prefers woman’s hair: Little bird is a picky nest builder
by Rachel Kirkpatrick

Ah, spring is here. Outside the trees and grounds are alive with the hustle and bustle of little birds actively collecting materials for their nests.

Some may use tufts of pod fluffs, others soft grasses, but for one tufted titmouse on Mountain Laurel Lane, human hair is preferred — straight from homeowner Mia Rossiter’s head.

For three years in a row now, presumably the same little tufted titmouse has become fixated on Ms. Rossiter’s long, wavy locks, her “thatch” as she describes it, during nest-building season.

Judith Freedman: Senator is ready for life’s next step
by Susan Wolf

Judith Freedman looks relaxed, a woman comfortable with her decision to retire from state office after 11 terms, and one who looks back with pride on her accomplishments.

Ms. Freedman, the state senator for the 26th District, recently announced her retirement and her endorsement of Wilton’s state Rep. Toni Boucher. “I’ve enjoyed the challenge and everything I’ve been able to do, but it’s time,” she said simply.

It has been a long time since Ms. Freedman, a former teacher, tossed her hat into the political ring. That was in 1986, and she only sent out one mailer — How things have changed!” she exclaimed.

Looking through that mailer, Ms. Freedman said many of the problems she cited then are the same today, things like transportation. “But Toni will pick up the ball,” she said.

Projected tax bills for 2008-09 At the town’s request, the following information is being provided on the estimated taxes property owners would pay if the town budget is approved on May 6 and the projected mill rate remains at 21.07 mills. Town Assessor John Ford provided the numbers.

For those who will receive the town benefit, a tax relief program for senior citizens, the local benefit — $2,225 — has not been deducted from the projected taxes. The taxes (available by downloading the document below) may be located by one’s address.

Benedetto’s concert benefits Darfur children
by Karen Dydzuhn
web-capstone-project.jpg

After honing her singing and acting skills for more than a decade, Brooke Benedetto, a senior at Joel Barlow High School, plans to put her theatrical training to good use by raising money in a benefit concert for children affected by genocide in Darfur.

The Easton teen will present “Dreams for the Children of Darfur” on Wednesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. at the Georgetown Saloon in Redding. There is no admission charge, however donations are welcome. All proceeds will be given to Save the Children, a relief organization with headquarters located in Westport.

The concert is the culmination of Brooke’s Capstone Project, an independent study program which allows high school students to create, research and execute a meaningful course of study during their senior year.
