What is the Scanvenger Hunt?
Hersam Acorn Newspapers will run a 'Scanvenger Hunt' ad with participating businesses in The Valley Gazette, The Amity Observer and The Huntington Herald in conjunction with Griffin Hospital's The Valley Goes Pink. The 'Scanvenger Hunt' ad will run October 13 and the hunt will take place October 14-22. The grand prize winner will receive an Apple iPad! (iPad provided by Griffin Hospital.) How to play:
Download/install reader software on your smartphone. The software is free and available from several sources. We recommend I-Nigma software. It is compatible on over 450 different devices. Text or scan the QR code hanging in the participating businesses' windows or displayed in the store and a special promotion or message will be delivered directly to your phone. If you do not receive a text message back, you may need to contact your service provider to enable premium text messaging services. Participants who scan/text the most codes will be entered to win an iPad, courtesy of Griffin Hospital. Hersam Acorn will randomly select a winner and provide a $100 gift certificate from a participating business of their choosing. Winners will be notified by text message.
The Valley Goes Pink is a grassroots, community-wide effort throughout the Lower Naugatuck Valley to:
- Create awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection
- Support the Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital, and
- Showcase partnering organizations

Every Wednesday in October - The Naugatuck VNA will dress in pink each Wednesday of the month
October 13 - The Young Emerging Professionals (a dynamic networking group of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce) will host Pink Night at Oronoque Country Club from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. Tickets are $35 each and may be purchased at the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce website at www.greatervalleychamber.com
October 14 - The wonderful Sue Dorn is throwing a Zumba fundraiser class on Friday, Oct 14th from 7PM to 9PM at the Boys & Girls Club on Howard Ave in Ansonia. It will be a fun night of Zumba with 4 different instructors. Says Sue: "I have had two students recently use the cancer center for breast cancer and this is why we have decided to keep the money local rather than donate it to [a national cause.]"
October 15 - The Athletic Football League of Shelton will be fundraising all day for The Valley Goes Pink with sales of pink lemonade, pink cotton candy, and pink shirts and socks during their games. Site TBA.
October 17-21 - Shelton Intermediate School (SIS) will be sponsoring a series of five fundraising events beginning Monday, October 17th and ending on Friday, October 21st. These events will be hosted by the SIS Teen Community Out Reach Program (Teen CORP). All money raised will be donated to the "The Valley Goes Pink" campaign in support of the Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital. Events will include selling of Cancer Awareness dog tags, lollipops, and pink donuts, along with a hat day event. October 21 - The Ansonia Lady Chargers Cheerleaders and the Ansonia Chargers Football Team will be "going pink" for the games against Holy Cross and Watertown. With pink poms and pink socks, they'll be ready to score a win against breast cancer! Cheerleaders will collect for the cause in the stands at half time. October 28 - Children throughout Ansonia will be wearing their stylish new Ansonia Cares T-Shirts thanks to the great organizing work of Missy Cook, a member of the Prendergast School faculty. All net proceeds from the sales of the shirts will benefit the Campaign!
